The whole reason we tend to not change or decide not to make changes in our lives is because it is easier to just stick with what we know. We are creatures of habit. We follow a pattern and deviating from this pattern of the norm is something which will create fear in many of us.
Why change? If it ain’t broke don’t fix it right? Well sometimes you don’t know you’re broken. Or you may not think you are and when you make a small change is when you realize that you just might need some fixing.
My friend Amanda knew she needed change. She knew she wasn’t happy with how things were going. So she opened herself up to whatever life brought her way. She found love in a relationship that she would have never thought of, it was with a transgender person.
It wasn’t the relationship that necessarily made the change, although that is a huge part of it, but it was also how the people around her perceived the change. They would shun her, ask her if she was suddenly gay, ask her why. And then there were a few of us who just went with her on her journey and offered her our support and friendship no matter what.
She discovered more about herself in one major change. She didn’t change who she was, she opened up to who she could be. She is still the same wonderful person who never fails to make me laugh and have a good time. And now she is happier than ever. And isn’t that all that matters?
